In a word, yes, and here’s why.
Now before we get into it, I should just add that this blog is directed at two groups of people; those who want to work in the PR field, and those who have an interest in developing their PR and communications skills, such as business owners or marketers.
Getting occasional media coverage is achievable for almost anyone, but getting consistent exposure on the right platforms takes planning and skill.
I remember having a conversation with a recruiter a few years ago, when I was in the process of getting a new job at an agency. It was early on in the process, so I asked whether it would be useful for me to do a course in PR, since I had the work experience but not a qualification.
To my surprise, she said no. What’s even more surprising is that I took her advice, almost without a second thought.
Fast forward to 2022, the year when I finally decided to check out some practical public relations and digital marketing courses, and loved every minute of it.
After doing the PR course in particular, I realised that I knew most of the key elements of the industry. The fact that I had not studied public relations meant that I didn’t know what I didn’t know. So for me, the course affirmed my skills and helped me zoom out to see the big picture.
Perhaps it’s because I’ve always been an advocate for learning that I would encourage you to go after it if doing a course in PR is something that you would like to do. Moreover, I believe that you being empowered to navigate the world PR on your own, or at least keep up with your PR team or agency, is essential.
So, in short, should you do a course in public relations? Yes, go for it.
